When to use regenerate thumbnails?

  • Couldn't find the documentation for this one.
I just opened a post that predates the upload of my images to S3.
The images, or at least thumbnails were missing, but I was able to restore them back by clicking on the image placeholder and clicking updating the update button when they appeared.
I assume this is what the regenerate thumbnails option is for and will scan and replace thumbnails across the entire site?
    Is this the case?
    Thanks.

Yes, regenerate thumbnails will force WordPress to rebuild thumbnails and they will then be uploaded to S3.

You can just run it on select images by using the list mode in the Media Library, checking the images you want and then selected "Regenerate Thumbnails" from the bulk action menu.
